Rugby league is played across Rarotonga by five clubs, with grades for men, women, juniors and masters. Whether you are a local, new to the island or visiting for a season, here is how the local competition works.
The clubs
Grades
The Rarotonga League runs Premier men, Women, Under 16 and Under 14 grades, plus a Girls competition that started as a new initiative in 2024. Masters rugby league runs alongside for players who want to keep going.
Where games are played
Games rotate around the island’s village grounds, including Aratere Park in Avatiu, Raemaru Park in Arorangi, Temurimotia Park in Titikaveka, Nukupure Park in Ngatangiia, Victoria Park in Tupapa and BCI Stadium.
When the season runs
The local season usually runs from February to May, with games on Friday nights and Saturdays. Results from the 2024 season are on our local competition page, and the 2026 draw will be added there when released.
How to join
- Pick the club for your village or area from the list above and message them on Facebook.
- Ask about pre-season training dates, registration and the grade that suits your age.
- Coaches and referees can also get involved. Cook Islands Rugby League runs accredited coaching and refereeing courses.
If you are not sure where to start, contact Cook Islands Rugby League and we will put you in touch with a club.
From local fields to the world stage
Local rugby league is the start of the pathway. Aitu captain KL Iro grew up in Rarotonga, and his mother Tina is president of the Arorangi Bears.
